SHS Photo Challenge 22

Well this was one of those weeks where, like so many have stated in previous weeks, I wondered if I would be able to pull it off.  Tuesday afternoon I managed to lock myself out of the house for 5 hours with only access to the garage. I was helping my daughter with her recycling as she had to be at a boccia practice for the Canadian National Boccia Competition.

She had only been gone for 10 minutes when I took a bag of cans and bottles to the garage and completely forgot about the automatic door that had recently been installed.  Yah . . . it locks automatically.  Unless you have the remote or a set of keys with you, you don't get back in that way.  No jacket, no keys, no phone, no bathroom.  I could go outside the garage but it was pretty cold out.  I was going to go to the neighbours and call my daughter but she just recently got a new phone and I don't know the number by memory yet.  Well I didn't but I do now.

So I played my own version of "Survivor"  . . .  first up, find a pot to pee in.  Paper towels, check.  Airline blankets, yup.  Comfy old office chair, bottles of water and a cupboard full of games.  Played some Farkle, some solitaire until my fingers got numb. When I got hungry, I found the trays of treats and the bags of romaine that were headed to the competition the next day.  Do I need to say that the romaine was intact but a couple of the treats were my supper? Another round of scouting out the garage turned up two sleeping bags which I opened up and snuggled into the chair.  Tried to sleep as I knew my girl would be at least 4 hours but that didn't happen.  That was the longest 5 hours of my life!

Thursday, Friday and Saturday I was volunteering at the competition from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.  I kept telling myself it's okay to skip a week of the hunt, but I just never want to.  So I quickly threw these together and satisfied my urge to join the hunt.  Looking forward to a much slower pace in the days ahead.

Now that I have got that off my chest, onto my finds . . .

1.  Water
A bit of a selfie hiding in the shower head.

2.  Light
I love this little lamp on my night table.  I made the shade about 15 years ago.

3.  Chocolate
Fry's Cocoa . . . the brand of choice for several generations and a key ingredient in some traditional treats.

4.  Animal
I moved the bird feeder so I could see it from my kitchen window and after several weeks have mastered sneaking up on them and got some great shots.  Isn't he gorgeous?

5. Crowded
This shot is from the boccia competition that I worked at these last three days.  The white ball is called the "jack" and the object of the game is to get your balls as close to the jack as possible.  Sometimes the balls become so crowded around the jack that the referees have to get right down with various measuring devices to determine who is closest and how many balls are scoring.  At least a dozen of the competitors will be competing at the London 2012 Paralympics.

Next weeks clues:
1.  Vintage
2.  Word or Quote
3.  Nature's Own
4.  People
5.  Photographer's Choice

  2. The bird is gorgeous. I can see why you would want to move the feeder so that you can watch them. I also enjoyed your picture of the lamp.

  3. Yikes, this week snuck up on me! I know the lock yourself out of your house scene well....but I had to call a locksmith as the closest set of keys were with my husband 300 miles away at his new job. I had gone outside to bring in some cushions as a bad storm was brewing, when both kids and the dog followed me outside, closed the door and well....we were all in our pj's and it started pouring rain with no way back in the house!! Thankfully a neighbor was home but it was hours before the locksmith showed up.

Love your light and the bird. And I'm wondering if that game is similar to what we call bocce ball?

  4. Inspired choices, Andrea. Good bird shot.
That is one cosy garage you have :-)
I bet it will be made even cosier in the future.
Hot and cold running water and an electric kettle :-)

    1. I had just turned on the coffeemaker in my suite so it was so hard knowing there was a fresh piping hot coffee on the other side of the wall. Wasn't so fresh by the time I got to it.

  10. Glad to hear you survived your 5-hour ordeal! Too bad you didn't have your camera with ya :). That is an awesome photo of that little bird! And I really like how you edited your "light" shot in b/w.

    1. Funny thing, Kathy . . . while I was stuck in there, I was mentally doing my scavenger hunt. Bottles of water, chocolate in the treats, lightbulb for light, a bug full of stuffed animals and crowded cupboards.

  13. Love the water shot. There's nothing like a hot shower to start the day in my books.
You made the very best of a cold and cheerless situation. At least there were some supplies and things to work with. Our garage has tools in it, nothing else. Oh, but I suppose I could use the tools to take the hinges off the door and get in that way.
Have a more relaxing week, Andrea.

  15. Andrea Dawn,

I just can't imagine you out in the cold garage for 5 hours. You need to get one of those things you wear around your neck and press if you are in trouble. lol! If you get pneumonia, your whole spring will be ruined. I'm so glad you had some stuff to tide you over. What did your daughter say?

You are so creative with your pictures. You work well under pressure, don't you?

    Warmly, (ha,ha)

    1. Dawn, my daughter Shannon was very upset with herself and would certainly have come rescued me if she had known. We have a plan to avoid this happening again.
